General description of the collection: The Alexander H. Howard, Jr. papers consists of his memoir, "Twelfth man: memories of WWII," written in May 2000. Howard's memoir is supplemented with photocopies of his personnel documents and selected letters written to his mother during WWII. In his memoir, Howard especially describes the U.S. Army Air Corps weather strike missions as reconnaissance missions over major cities in Japan. He describes the difficulties in predicting weather over Japan during WWII, and the need for more accurate information. Howard describes his life at Isley Field on Saipan between missions, the conditions, and the entertainment available. Howard also describes the entertainment available to officers in the Pacific Theater of Operations and in California. He describes his work as a weather forecaster on Hawaii, and briefly describes his two assignments to forecasting projects.
